Cary Barnes

History & Roles


Major Barnes, United States Army veteran, began his career with the Kinston Police Department in 1995. He is currently the Interim Major of Patrol Operations.

During his tenure, he has served in numerous roles within the Kinston Police Department including:
  • Bike Officer
  • Field Training Officer
  • K-9 Officer
  • Narcotics Officer
  • Patrol Officer
  • SWAT Officer

He has also been assigned to various specialized units including the Police Community Action Team (PCAT).

While working his way up in the ranks, he has served in supervisory roles as:
  • Gang Sergeant
  • K-9 Units
  • Narcotics Sergeant/Captain
  • Patrol Captain
  • Supervisor over School Resource Officers
  • SWAT Team Operator/Commander
  • Traffic

Recognition


He has received awards for Narcotics Officer of the year for the State of North Carolina and Kinston Police Officer of the Year.

Education


Major Barnes has completed leadership schools while in the United States Army and from the NC Justice Academy. He is also a general and specialized instructor.
